Chindi Rugs Are Made

Braided chindi rugs are made by twisting cotton-rich yarn into continuous braids, then coiling and hand-stitching those braids together to form the rug body. The braid pitch, yarn weight and colour sequencing are controlled at each stage to achieve the desired surface character.
The braiding process begins with yarn preparation — cotton-rich blends selected for colour fastness and workability. Yarn is twisted under consistent tension into a flat braid of fixed width, typically between 18mm and 32mm depending on the rug specification. The braid is then coiled from the centre outward for round rugs, or laid in parallel rows for rectangular formats, and stitched by hand at each coil junction.
The resulting surface has a characteristic raised relief, with colour appearing and receding across the braid coils in a rhythm dictated by the yarn colour sequence. Longer colour runs produce broader stripe-like effects; shorter runs create a denser, more confetti-style colour field. Both are achievable within the same construction method.
